How to become a Muslim free thinker ? ( & what is free thinking)

We have come to think today that being a free thinker means you leave Islam. But what i would like to say is that not being a free thinker means you are already far away from true Islam. And the Islam you hold currently is fake and corrupted.

Why do i say this?
Because our reality today as Muslims is very similar to the Arabs before true Islam came to them. What they were on is their forefathers' religion. And guess what. This is what we are on today. We are simply following our forefathers. And that's why if your parents are from a certain sect of Islam you will also be of that sect most likely. Because we don't bother to search for truth. It's not a priority for us. And the result is we just become a copy and paste generation.

So what makes a person a true Muslim rather than just a copy paste job (aka Muslim by name/ appearance) ? It's how we use our mind i believe. Whether we ask ourselves the big questions or not. Eg what is Allah? How do we know he or it is really here? Shall we just take the word of our sheikhs for it or shall we try to see for ourselves etc. The real Muslims are those with curious minds and are willing to question everything and verify all issues of doubt so they can reach to certainty if it exists.

This is how i now understand true Islam. With how much thought you spent on the crucial issues of life. Why are we here etc. And when we are told it's to worship God then we can ask what exactly is meant by worship in this context. And furthermore, why does Allah need or want our worship? How does that benefit God for instance? Does it benefit Allah? And so on. All very strange questions. And such Muslims  spend ages trying to run after such questions. To get to the truth. This is true Islam for me. A journey in thought.

It may take 20 years to get there. Or 100. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you walk the journey. You engage and use your mind.

And i believe that if you don't see this as an integral part of Islam then you have misunderstood Islam. You will be Muslim at the superficial level only. Not deep down. This is my view and Allah knows better.

I'm not trying to get you to leave Islam. The opposite. I'm trying to get you to see true Islam.
And to leave fake Islam. Where the outside looks Islamic but the inside is not.

And my belief is that it all starts with the mind. Not with the beard or hijab. Fix the inside first and the outside will come naturally. Fix only the outside then you will feel it's all fake and you won't like yourself i think. Because you know it's not real. That it's not the real you. You're probably just doing it to please the community etc. An ego thing.

PS: Don't think that taking this journey will make you lose your Emaan. Think instead that it will give you an Emaan that you never dreamt you could have. Alhamdulilah it has worked for me in this way. But only after patience and perseverance.
If you're after just a quick fix don't bother taking this road.  Wassalam.
But those who decide to embark on it. Well. Prepare for Jannah on earth Inshalah. You won't regret it Inshalah.
But know that the road is tough.
Tough but worth it Inshalah.

    As someone who feels drawn to Islam from a vague unpassionate Christian childhood, now at age 50 i'm finding so much interest in Islam and have a thirst for knowledge. i have prayed in mosque with a dear Palestinian friend who was over from the west bank on a rare visit to do talks. I find your words very wise as i try to go with my heart not my appearance. I don't live near to a mosque but pray every night for Allah's will and ask for all the good people and friends and family in the world to be looked after. I pray to the east and try to go deep into my thoughts not of gain but understanding and clarity. Your words really struck a message. Thank you. Reforming the Muslims in the UK ! What is needed and how ?

Bismillah ArRahman ArRaheem I think there are many good Muslim speakers on youtube that are addressing the issues of the Ummah and helping to wake the Muslims up and get them more understanding of the deen and better practicing. Those who are willing to learn and are open to leanring can benefit a lot. But those who just want the traditional path and follow as before we cannot reach them well and so they will end up staying where they are. Ideally i think we need to set up groups that work together and talk together and are active in their localities. Who are happy to engage with different ideas and work for improvement of the community. This may be what is missing. The new knowledge needs to be turned into community action I believe, where Muslims talk with each other and see where we are going and how best to combat our problems and so on.
